Canvas Size Guide — What Size Wall Art Do You Need?
Quick answer: for most walls, choose canvas wall art that fills two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it. Above a standard 84-inch sofa, that means a piece 40 to 60 inches wide — our 40×30" or 60×40" formats. For narrower spots like hallways or bedside walls, 24×16" or 36×24" works best.
Canvas sizes we offer
| Size (inches) | Size (cm) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 24×16" | 60×40 cm | Hallways, home office desks, gallery walls, smaller bedrooms |
| 36×24" | 90×60 cm | Bedrooms, dining rooms, above consoles and dressers |
| 40×30" | 100×75 cm | Living rooms, above sofas and fireplaces — our most popular size |
| 60×40" | 150×100 cm | Statement walls, large living rooms, lofts, above king beds |
Every size is available in two finishes: No Frame (gallery-wrapped canvas, ready to hang) and Premium Black (floating frame).

The two rules designers use
The 2/3 rule: wall art looks balanced when it spans 60–75% of the furniture beneath it (sofa, bed, console). A 60-inch-wide sofa calls for art 36–45 inches wide.
Eye-level hanging: hang your canvas so its center sits 57–60 inches from the floor — museum standard. Above furniture, leave 6–10 inches between the furniture top and the bottom edge of the art.
What size for each room?
- Living room: go large — 40×30" above a sofa, 60×40" for a statement wall or open-plan space.
- Bedroom: 36×24" above a queen headboard, 40×30" or 60×40" above a king.
- Home office: 24×16" or 36×24" — large enough to read on video calls without overwhelming the room.
- Nursery and bathroom: 24×16" suits smaller walls and tighter sightlines.
- Hallway or entryway: a row of 24×16" pieces, or one vertical 36×24" per wall segment.
Horizontal or vertical?
Match the orientation to the wall, not the furniture: wide walls above sofas and beds favor horizontal art, while narrow columns of wall — between windows, in hallways, beside doors — favor vertical. See our dedicated guides: horizontal wall art sizes and vertical wall art sizes.
Size guide FAQ
What is the most popular canvas size?
40×30 inches (100×75 cm). It fits comfortably above a standard sofa, reads clearly from across the room, and works in most US living rooms.
What size wall art should go above a sofa?
Two-thirds of the sofa's width. For an 84–90 inch sofa, choose a 40×30" or 60×40" canvas, hung 6–10 inches above the backrest.
Is 24×16 inches too small for a living room?
On its own above a sofa, yes. Use 24×16" in pairs or trios as a gallery wall, or alone in hallways, offices and smaller bedrooms.
How high should I hang my canvas?
Center it 57–60 inches from the floor. In rooms where people are usually seated (dining room, living room), you can go 2–3 inches lower.
Do your canvases come ready to hang?
Yes — every canvas ships ready to hang, in both the No Frame and Premium Black finishes, with hanging hardware pre-mounted.
